Opal 6 ply produces a slightly thicker sock than 4 ply. Being thicker (closer to a DK weight) 6 ply yarn produces a heavier, bulkier sock, making it ideal for winter, hiking or boot socks where extra insulation is needed to keep feet cosy.
The thicker nature of the yarn means that projects knit up more quickly, which is great if you’re short of time or find 4 ply yarn and needles too slow and fiddly.
